Project description

The Nicolson Institute replaced the existing secondary school and includes the refurbishment and remodelling of three listed buildings (Matheson Hall, Pentland Building and the Clock Tower). The 1,100 pupil school building is located on the original Nicolson Institute site, incorporating the last historical vestiges into an overall composition and forming a series of sheltered, public and private external spaces. The building form and materiality respond to the local severe weather conditions and the civic and historical context within which the site is located.

An enhanced setting for the Council Offices and Lewis Sports Centre is created and a physical connection with the sports centre brings benefit to both the school and the wider community.
