Project description

Our approach to the Design Concepts for Typical Schools from Kindergarten to 12 Grade in Abu Dhabi places the student at the heart of the design. The key drivers directing the solution are the activities taking place in any given space; building typologies; social structure; natural and cultural landscapes. We explored the relationship of family and community in the context of learning environments, the juxtaposition of fluidity and solidity within the natural and built environments, and responded to the prevailing climatic conditions and socio-cultural aspirations of a nation.

Innovations & added value

A simple ‘kit of parts’ was developed, each of which related in scale to the child, starting with the classroom, building up to the clusters, the street, the school centre (the ‘heart’) and the wider community. This kit is flexible enough to be adapted to many site contexts and captures a shared vision that is innovative, imaginative, functional and sustainable.
