We are committed to sustainable design. From the outset, we address sustainability by working to create highly liveable, attractive and biodiverse environments that future generations will seek to preserve.
We promote fully decarbonised construction and buildings with excellent energy performance in use.
On completion, our design for One Angel Square in Manchester achieved the highest-ever BREEAM score for a major office building.
We enjoy working collaboratively: we invite ideas from clients and consultants and aim to spread knowledge widely. At the same time, we challenge clients and project teams from briefing stage onwards with measurable targets in key areas such as energy performance.
We are aligned with both LETI and RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge targets for operational energy in offices and homes (we are a RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge signatory) and have set our own target for hotels. We support post-occupancy survey as a way to effectively assess what is working well.
We use an internally-written Environmental Management System (EMS) that is independently ISO 14001 certified. Our EMS is highly focussed on Scope 3 emission reductions – i.e. emissions related to building design & specification – while also covering Scope 1 & 2 emissions.
All of our projects are internally audited for sustainability at the end of RIBA Stage 2 with a documented review. We evaluate and adapt our EMS each year, and from 2022 we have published an Annual Environmental Review.
We are a lively community of sustainability-engaged professionals. The practice employs several Passivhaus Certified Designers and supports further training and qualification in low energy design. Internal knowledge-sharing and workshopping is key to the way we work, and sustainability is central to all of our practice conversations about projects.

We see sustainability as designing for the long run; shaping buildings and communities for liveability, accessibility, and lasting value. For example, the Cooperative Headquarters in Manchester’s NOMA district has excellent BREEAM performance but is also a strong—and now proven—anchor for urban regeneration. Over the last year, we have reinforced our overall approach—including our skills in contextual architecture and masterplanning—with a focus on low energy design, and our team of Passivhaus Designers has expanded to match.
Above all, we look to assist clients to get the best out of what is already there, adding to it in an informed and inspiring way, and enjoying the process.
