Located on George Street in the heart of the New Town, Intercontinental Edinburgh The George (formerly The George Hotel, Est. 1880, 21-23 George Street), is a Grade A listed building comprising a 248 bed hotel, Burr & Co Coffeehouse and Printing Press Bar & Kitchen. Its King’s Hall to the rear of the building is a popular events venue.

The vision was to strip back the layers of intervention that had been added throughout the years, to bring back the character and sense of grandeur of the building. We also aspired to increase the Hotel’s exposure to George Street, both of these aims have been resolved through sensitive restoration of the grand suites on this facade and the strategic design moves to reinstate the original entrance door and shop front to the Burr & Co coffee house. The individuality that each townhouse now possesses has increased the Hotel’s sense of place along George Street and increased the permeability of the street at ground level, similar to when they were first built.

Innovations & added value

Our clients’ drive to increase the number of suites within the Hotel proved a great opportunity for us to reinstate the grand George Street facing rooms, using historical floor plans, photos and remnants of original features found within the rooms, we stripped back the modern additions creating lustrous suites within the 5 original Townhouse feus.

3DReid completed the full refurbishment of the Principal Edinburgh George Street with Starwood then following IHG’s acquisition we completed another full rebranding and subsequent refurbishment to Intercontinental Edinburgh The George.
