Projects / Abu Dhabi Airport Ground Transport Hub

Client

Abu Dhabi International Airport

Project description

Successful integration of ground transport modes is key to the success of a major airport. Our design for a ground transport hub for the new Midfield terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport enables clear passenger flows within a multi-level structure, connecting both high speed and light rail connections with road transport options and parking. The design is responsive to its climatic context; the oversailing architectural form provides extensive shading while making full use of natural light.

Innovations & added value

The brief from ADIA sought a design that preserved views to the Midfield terminal as seen from the major approach roads. Our response develops a vaulted geometry that has a relatively low visual profile but one which also has its own identity. The interlocking arched structural supports have very long spans, and are in reinforced concrete, in some cases springing from the level of the excavated rail platforms, well below the ground plane.
