3DReid in partnership with Sutherland Hussey, and a team that includes AECOM and Gross Max, have made it onto a stellar international shortlist for the £47m landmark V&A project in Dundee. The ‘V&A at Dundee’ project seeks to create a world class visitor attraction that will make a major contribution to the ongoing regeneration of Dundee and in particular form the centrepiece of Dundee’s new waterfront redevelopment. Initial studies indicate a likely total internal floor area of around 7,000 sq m. There would be a range of permanent, semi-permanent and temporary galleries of different sizes; some used in combination to mount blockbuster exhibitions. There may also be space for artists-in-residence, educational activities, an auditorium, offices, back-of-house, high quality retail and catering (both a café and a destination restaurant overlooking the River Tay). It is estimated that ‘V&A at Dundee’ would bring an additional 500,000 visitors to Dundee, create up to 900 jobs locally as well as add £5.7m output to the Scottish economy. There is currently no physical space in Scotland dedicated to showcasing contemporary applied arts and design. The team will now work up scheme proposals with a final decision made at the end of the Summer. The project is programmed to start on site in the second quarter of 2012 for completion by the third quarter of 2014. The Final Shortlist:
