To imagine a new building in a historic city such as Florence invites big questions: What is the role of history now? What can history contribute to the future? This is an age of rapid birth and rebirth of new and old cities, and yet to design for Florence requires a rather different sensibility than for the fast-booming megacities. The project, then, intends to investigate how the City and its (ordinary and extraordinary) buildings evolve over time, reflect on the phenomenon of ‘museumification’, and seek an alternative approach to challenge the meanings of historical continuity and conservation in architecture.

The project involves a series of experiments with a variety of representational techniques – from the more conventional crafts to CAD/CAM................
