"Hsiao-Wei’s project has engaged in particularly rich processes, rich and pertinent narratives to the context and specific site in Florence and proposes an astonishing building that is as equally adept in its spatial and material organisation as its historical, political and philosophical narratology." Dorian Wiszniewski Library Gabinetto Vieusseux, Piazza dei Ciompi, Florence To imagine a new building in a historic city such as Florence invites big questions: What is the role of history now? What can history contribute to the future? This is an age of rapid birth and rebirth of new and old cities, and yet to design for Florence requires a rather different sensibility than for the fast-booming megacities. The project, then, intends to investigate how the City and its (ordinary and extraordinary) buildings evolve over time, reflect on the phenomenon of ‘museumification’, and seek an alternative approach to challenge the meanings of historical continuity and conservation in architecture. The project involves a series of experiments with a variety of representational techniques – from the more conventional crafts to CAD/CAM................
