Alan Keane Nominated By Charles Rattray & Stuart Dickson

"In this project Alan Keane has made such positive spaces in the volumes between his more traditional theatres. Influenced by the still-lives of Giorgio Morandi and the sculpture of Eduardo Chillida, these spaces are atmospheric and poetic, sometimes shadowy, sometimes sunlit. Alan Keane Statement

When discernable as separate threads in a typological development, theatre types narrate their individual heritages in a built form. The premise for this experiment in theatre architecture is to acknowledge the limitations of designing the auditorium as a concluded exercise, to accept specific constraints and then to act on them. The aims and objectives of the investigation are not to formulate an ethics of theatre design, it attempts only to acquire knowledge and gain new insights.

Four theatres; an opera house, amphitheatre, black box, and chamber music hall, were chosen rather than a multi-use venue which would dilute the strengths of each typology.........
