Most importantly they connect parts of the city, making new and useful cross routes." Charles Rattray / Stuart Dickson Alan Keane Statement When discernable as separate threads in a typological development, theatre types narrate their individual heritages in a built form. The premise for this experiment in theatre architecture is to acknowledge the limitations of designing the auditorium as a concluded exercise, to accept specific constraints and then to act on them. The aims and objectives of the investigation are not to formulate an ethics of theatre design, it attempts only to acquire knowledge and gain new insights. Four theatres; an opera house, amphitheatre, black box, and chamber music hall, were chosen rather than a multi-use venue which would dilute the strengths of each typology.........
