"Graeme has been nominated for the prize for the sheer brilliance of the building’s design, sitting as it does in the type of productive landscape that will characterize future city living." Doug Clelland Adam's Cidery The Cidery explores the significance of the apple in human culture. The brief arises from the masterplan which is centred around a park, its aim is to resolve the existing cliff edge condition adjacent to the railway. Orchards are planted on site and the apples (which fruit annually) will be stored underground in cold conditions so cider production can continue all year. Apples from the site are handpicked from the orchard and carried to the Cidery by the local community. The skin of the building is analogous to bark or apple skins rotting. The narrative of the building follows the process of cider making, from the top where the apple is picked and bitten into, falling downwards to the bottom (temptation) where the exploration of the earth commences and the cider is finally drunk..........
