A city at a crossroads: Mediterranean and Arab, cosmopolitan and nationalist, secular and religious, liberal and conservative, political and hedonistic, superficial and genuine. Beirut is a city in search of its identity.
‘Beirut, Beirut’ is a project that aims to explore and understand the deep complexities and contradictions of a city of unparallel extremes. Initial investigations study the intricacies of Beirut’s infamous ‘Green Line’, and proceed to create a dérive of culture through the city that will help to reconnect local communities throughout the fragmented city. These subtle interventions against the unsympathetic masterplanning of Solidere (a private company entrusted with the reconstruction of the city centre) act as a temporal support structure for the growth and healing of the city; creating a new architectural approach and identity which is then reflected in the production of the Media and Arts Centre I have designed.
