The current number one issue facing the airport sector is climate change. Air travel, whilst currently only constituting 2% of carbon emissions compared with 54% by cars (2005 figures) is the fastest growing source of carbon emissions. Many existing airports, particularly in the south-east, have constrained capacity and face a significant challenge in balancing expansion plans with environmental and economic impacts, not only for passengers, but for residents local to airports. Security is another key area for focus, particularly in the aftermath of 9/11 and other terrorist threats and attacks. Intelligent design solutions can help to alleviate the extent of pollution caused by congestion on runway space or for passengers in terminals.
