Architects 3DReid, engineers Faber Maunsell and contractor Laing O’Rourke have completed the ‘eco-fit-out’ of a 70,000sqft Marks and Spencer store at the Silverburn Mall in Pollok. The retail giant is aiming to be carbon neutral by 2012 and this is the first new build project in line with M&S’ Plan A initiative, a business-wide £200 million ‘eco-plan’ that will impact on every part of the M&S business over the next five years.. Shell architect is BDP. Stephen Allison, project leader at 3DReid said: “Being the first Plan A fit-out, the project has given us the opportunity to have a defining input into the concept design and delivery. The shell was already 75% complete at the time of the Plan A announcement and so we had to very quickly redesign our ideas, which proved a very exciting and rewarding challenge.” • Use up to 55 per cent less energy than similar sized M&S stores through the installation of more efficient lighting, refrigeration, heating and ventilation systems as well as lobby designed to improve air tightness and minimise heat and energy loss • Be powered with green renewable energy from the first-ever M&S wind turbine, located in Aberdeenshire, delivering a 95 per cent carbon dioxide saving • Boast a number of water saving initiatives, including collecting rainwater and refrigeration condensation for use in the dual flush toilets, and use self-closing taps resulting in savings of up to 40 per cent of a comparable M&S store’s water consumption • Be the first M&S store to eliminate potential leakage of harmful HFCs (Hydro Fluoro Carbons) by using fridges that operate on hydrocarbon and CO2 refrigerants • Use fridges fitted with guards to reduce cool air leakage which will save at least 4 per cent of the energy needed to operate each fridge • Use recycled and recyclable materials including recyclable plastic shelving • Use of BREEAM A-rated materials with low or non-hazardous content and low energy processing within the specifications for ceilings and floor and wall coverings During construction of the store, up to 80 per cent of waste and key construction off cuts have been recycled or re-used. Niall Trafford, Executive of Store Design and Specification at Marks & Spencer, said: “M&S Silverburn is our first brand-new ‘eco-efficient’ store which we are very excited about opening. It has provided us with a great opportunity to develop and trial new technologies that we hope to be able to roll out across future store openings.” “Securing renewable energy source to power the store is also a major coup for us, especially as it has resulted in a 95 per cent reduction in Co2 emissions – an achievement that takes us closer to our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2012.” 3DReid is currently working on a number of other stores for M&S as part of the Plan A initiative.
