What makes a successful airport environment?

JG Ballard, writing for The Observer in 1997, said: “Airports and airfields have always held a special magic, gateways to infinite possibilities that only the sky can offer.” However, ten years on and post-9/11 is this still the reality? With increased passenger concern over security and long queues at each stage of the process, air travel is becoming increasingly stressful and frustrating.

The airport as a gateway, however, does still hold true. There is the opportunity to capitalise on this again and once more make air travel a memorable experience.
